Royal Touch Golden Retrievers

Originating in the Scottish Highlands in the late 1800s, the Golden Retriever was developed by Lord Tweedmouth, by crossing the original yellow Flat-Coated Retriever, with the now extinct Tweed Water Spaniel.   He later crossed in the bloodhound, Irish Setter, and more Tweed Water Spaniel.  The dogs were called the Golden Flat-Coat and only later were they given the name Golden Retriever.  Was created by Lord Tweedmouth for the intention of acting as a hunting dog that was suited to the Scottish landscape.

English Cream Golden Retrievers are stockier, tend to have lighter cream coloured coats, with noticeable differences in the head, eyes and muzzle.  American Golden Retrievers are shorter.  The American Golden Retriever's coat is darker than the English, sometimes almost red. They are less stockier then the English Golden Retriever.  English Cream Golden Retriever tend to be heavier then the American Goldens but, I have also had large American Goldens.  It really depends on the mother and father and there backgrounds as Golden Retrievers are classified as a medium-sized dog and the average is 55 to 90 pounds.

Needs of a Golden Retriever are very demanding, the need lots of daily exercise as they are very active dogs. Preferably, they should be exercised at least twice a day for thirty minutes or longer.  Their coat needs to be brushed daily as it is long and will tangle should it be allowed.  Ideally a medium to large fenced yard is best to provide them with enough space, but they are suitable for living in an apartment provided they are walked on a regular basis.  The Golden Retriever is made happy with pursuits like swimming and retrieving balls or other toys.

"He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion."

If you are thinking about buying a Golden Retriever, there are some health problems of which you should be aware. Have the parents examined for common health problems that are present in the breed.   I prove all my dogs to be OFA (organization that collates and disseminates information concerning orthopedic and genetic disease of animals.) That means my dogs will have there heart, hips, eyes and elbows cleared.

Besides being popular pets, Golden Retrievers are useful in many ways. Golden Retrievers are excellent gun dogs for hunting, and of course they are used for retrieving.  The breed is used for guide dogs for the blind, in search and rescue missions, and as therapy dogs.  Golden Retrievers also score very well in obedience and agility contests.

Golden Retrievers are a handful when they are puppies, be prepared to give them lots of attention.  However, Golden Retrievers require lots of attention and companionship throughout their lives in order to be happy, as they remain active and playful throughout their adulthood. Because of their breeding bloodlines, Golden Retrievers love two things- retrieving and water.  The combination of a Frisbee and a day at the beach is a Golden Retriever's idea of heaven.

These dogs are wonderful animals and thats why they are ranked one of the top family dogs, that are highly intellegent combining to make wonderful companions.  As with all pets, they require some responsibility and work, but in the end they will devote their whole lives to you and your family.
